This paper provides an outline of the juridical and practical arrangements taken by the proconsuls of Asia in order to efficiently administer justice in their province. Particular attention is given to the various steps required for the organisation of the assizes for each provincial judiciary district (conventus iuridici). Since the number of districts, already high if compared to that of other provinces, gradually increased in the first three centuries AD, the proconsuls had the possibility to call in the same place the assizes for two or more districts, thus avoiding travelling from one extreme of the province to another. This is attested by the behaviour of Cicero during his proconsulate in Cilicia in 51 BC and by a passage of Dio Chrysostomus (35, 17), that confirms the persistence of this practice under the Empire. A final section is dedicated to the movements of C. Iulius Severus (procos. 152–53) between the different conventus on the basis of the informations furnished by the orations of Aelius Aristides and other sources.Read less <
