Alpha Condé came to power in 2010, following calamitous elections marked by the weak legitimacy of electoral institutions and the ethnicization of politics. This heavy legacy bore on his mandates, culminating in the coup of 2021, with the new military authoritarianism drawing legitimacy from the failures of Condé's electoral authoritarianism, just as the latter had drawn legitimacy from the failures of the military transition that preceded. What these two authoritarian regimes have in common is the strength they derive from mining revenues and the persistent ethnicization of politics. In the face of this authoritarianism, resistance and popular "anger" are asserting themselves, at times framed and organized by a social movement, the National Front for the Defense of the Constitution (FNDC).Read less <
