Historically, the Wag Himra area of northern Ethiopia has been affected by famine and conflict with central government. Several recent droughts have made the lives of the isolated Agaw farmers very insecure and dependent on government food security systems and/or international humanitarian organisations. This paper describes the different aid systems that support these people but fail to offer sustainable solutions to lift them out of poverty, thus driving them to migrate. This leads to questions about whether the government has deliberately chosen not to help the region, beyond maintaining a perpetual state of emergency, and about why international aid organisations have chosen not to leave an area where they cannot work independently.Read less <
