Many finds of gold and silver “ingots” in Celtic Europe have been recorded recently. These “ingots” are all generally interpreted as blanks or semi-finished products related to coin production. This interpretation stems from a linear view of the evolution of coinage. However, the use of metal as money is well documented for the Mediterranean basin. But what was the situation in temperate Europe? Can a similar usage be considered there as well? The fact that the objects have been found in the earliest agglomerations of the Celtic world raises many questions.
