This brief study aims to describe connective attributive syntax in Basque. Basque is, on the whole, ergative at the case marking and agreement levels but Indo-European languages' ‘subject' and ‘object' categories are not so valid taking syntactic/morphological criteria as a basic element. Attributive complements occur only when the intransitive verb's single argument is marked for the absolutive empty case and when the transitive verb's argument is marked for the absolutive case as well. Thus we can say that attributive syntactic function is a semantic property of the referent of the ‘realizator of the sentence syntactic kernel' (‘actualisateur du noyau syntaxique de la phrase') and of it alone. At the semantic level, the unique participant in intransitive clauses has no specific semantic role, it is merely qualified; in transitive clauses the qualified noun refers to the non-agent argument, more precisely the experiencer.Read less <
