Located on the southernmost tip of the Iberian Peninsula, in Andalusia, the city of Baelo Claudia is one of the major Roman sites along the Straits of Gibraltar. The city had extensive hydraulic infrastructure pertaining to its water-supply: three aqueducts, a castellum aquae, a monumental fountain, several lead pipes and baths. In this paper, I will concentrate on engineering issues relating to slope, with a focus on bridges and other technical features, such as dropshafts and settling tanks or piscinae limariae. This first section presents the progress of a research programme that began in 2013 with a survey, and supplemented in 2016 with strategically-placed archaeological test trenches.< Réduire
