Cadmium (Cd) invented in 1817, as a by-product of Zinc refining process, has an irreplaceable spot in industries. Consumer demands are surplus as opposed to the natural Cadmium levels available in atmosphere. Toxic effects of Cd on humans and environment, has been a subject of intense research, arising due to the vast variety of device applications that Cd offers. Human exposure to Cd is primarily through environmental insidious contaminants arising from chemical industries, metal treatment plants, electroplating, pesticides, storage batteries, detectors, mining and metallurgy. Since 2004, legally permitted level of Cd in electronics is 0.002%. Unprecedented expansion of global market for electrical and electronic products continue to accelerate, leading to Electronic wastes (E-wastes) (including cathode ray tubes (CRT), telephones, cell phones, personal computers, monitors, air conditioners and many other home appliances), where Cd is an integral part of many devices. Some of the important compound semiconductors contain Cd as a constituent, such as Cadmium Sulfide, Cadmium Selenide, Cadmium Telluride, Cadmium Zinc Telluride, Cadmium Manganese Telluride, Cadmium Gallium Telluride and Mercury Cadmium Telluride. These compound semiconductors are widely used for solar cells, detectors and in remote control devices. Physicists world-wide are on the verge of finding an alternative for Cd semiconductors, such as antimonite family and high purity germanium.
