Smoking remains common, with an exposure that begins early during pregnancy. It induces epigenetic changes, with a trans-generational transmission. Smoking increases the risk of uncontrolled asthma during childhood and adult life. Asthma is also associated with increased risk of a decline of lung function and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Women are more at risk of developing early and severe COPD.
