En | Mental health professionals are one of the main sources of stigma according to people with schizophrenia and their families. The stereotype of incompetence, in the broadest sense, appears to be central to this stigmatization, even though the valorization of skills is a fundamental aspect of people’s support and recovery. The place of the neuropsychologist, perceived as the psychologist of cognitive competence, is a determining factor in this stigmatization of competence. This article reports original data on the stigma of schizophrenia among neuropsychologists. The results reported four highly stigmatized skill domains : ability to relate well socially, ability to be effective in their work, ability to make decisions about their health, and ability to control their emotions. Intelligence was found to be less stigmatized than the other dimensions. Beliefs about the recovery possibility from schizophrenia and beliefs in a continuum approach are factors associated with less stigmatization of competences. This is an entire aspect of the neuropsychologist’s clinical practice that is discussed.
