Whether it be reared, hunted or protected, the animal often plays a decisive - if not essential - part in the organisation of practices and in the structuring of the relationships with nature of certain societies. In the Pyrénées, the survival of pastoral activity, the importance of hunting and the current imperatives of protecting certain species such as the bear make certain valleys special zones of interest where the relationships between society and animals are observed. Marking by its ubiquity the social and symbolic perceptions of nature, in wild or domestic areas, the animal acquires a local and particular status and becomes an essential element in the understanding of men's relationships with their environment.< Réduire
