En | This article stems from a presentation of the annual symposium of the journal Sociologie on the theme "Sociology to its borders. Stakes and impasses of an interdisciplinary dialogue", organized in collaboration with the Centre Emile Durkheim at the University of Bordeaux on May 25, 2012. We thank its author for accepting our invitation to publish a very similar version of this presentation in our column "Bilan critique". The text below clarifies the notion of religious belief as it is defined by sociologists, formulates the great contemporary research programs in this field of research (of the culturalist, economic or rationalistic types), and highlights the interest of our discipline in a dialogue with historians, philosophers, anthropologists, linguists, psychologists, and economists. The question that persists and that justifies this pluridisciplinarity is that of knowing what an individual says when he believes in something, or even when he says he does not believe in it.
