L'impossible transition ? La fatalité du charbon au Royaume-Uni

Revue d'histoire de l'énergie, n° 4, janvier 2020 http://energyhistory.eu/node/177 Cet article cherche à comprendre les raisons du fatalisme victorien face à une dépendance énergétique au charbon dont on ne parvient à s'extraire, pour mieux penser ce qu'une transition énergétique pourrait être. Il décrit l'existence d'une pensée providentielle de l'énergie, manne divine dont il faut faire bon usage et qui autorise la domination mondiale. La société britannique est ainsi traversée d'une mauvaise conscience liée au gaspillage de charbon. Comment, dès lors, penser l'après-charbon sans imaginer le pire ? La vision tragique du futur-il n'y aura pas de 2 e chance-s'explique à son tour par une conception de la transition qui porte sur la source et non sur le système énergétique dans son ensemble. Mots clés : charbon, transition, Royaume-Uni, système énergétique, victorien This article aims at understanding the reasons for the Victorian fatalism towards coal dependency-inducing an inability to escape from this energy-in order to better understand what an energy transition may be. The article depicts a providential thought of energy in the period, when coal was seen as God-given, and led to a world domination : therefore, the Victorian society is ridden by guilt because of its waste of coal. How, then, can one imagine a post-coal country without imagining the worst ? This tragic vision of the future-there will be no second chance-relies on an understanding of the transition as dealing with the source itself instead of the energy system as a whole.
