| dc.description.abstract | Après une évocation des aménagements d’époque byzantine liés au souvenir du baptême du Christ dans le Jourdain à Sapsaphas, l’article étudie la dizaine de baptistères identifiés à ce jour sur le territoire jordanien. Dans un premier temps sont envisagées la distribution géographique et la nature des édifices auxquels sont associés les baptistères, leur chronologie et leur position relative à l’église. Le corpus se caractérise ainsi par le faible nombre de baptistères urbains connus. Les autres sont presque systématiquement associés à de grands sanctuaires de pèlerinage ruraux ou périurbains, souvent liés à une présence monastique. Sont ensuite étudiés la typologie architecturale et le décor des baptistères, l’emplacement et l’environnement des cuves, leur typologie et les aménagements spécifiques. On constate, au fil du temps, une tendance au raccourcissement des trajets baptismaux. | |
| dc.description.abstractEn | After an evocation of the archaeological remains of the Protobyzantine period on the traditional locations of Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan river at Sapsaphas, the paper studies the ten baptisteries known up to date in Jordan. It deals first with the topographical position of the baptisteries, the nature of the building to which there are associated, their chronology and their position in respect to the church building. There are quite few urban baptisteries. On the contrary, many of them are associated to pilgrim centres and to the presence of monks. After that, the architectural typology and the decoration of the baptisteries are examined, as well as the location of the fonts, their typology and particular furnishings. In the later baptisteries, we can notice a restriction of the baptismal processions. | |
