On 15 October 2019, Mozambique held its sixth multi-party elections. For the sixth time, Renamo, the former rebellion (1977-1992), was defeated and did not recognise the results, alleging massive fraud. Frelimo, which has been in power since 1975, won the election with a score of 73%, which nobody believes. The power of this party-state is a key factor in explaining its "victory", but it is not the only one. Renamo's umpteenth defeat also raises questions about the nature and culture of this political party, which is politically weak, civil but militaristic in mentality, and incapable of building itself outside electoral periods.
