Photosynthesis (GPP), the largest CO2 flux from the land surface, is currently estimated with considerable uncertainty between 100-175 Pg C yr-1. More robust estimates of global GPP could be obtained from the atmospheric budgets of other tracers such as, the oxygen isotopic composition (δ18O) of atmospheric CO2 or carbonyl sulfide (COS). However, the partitioning of GPP and soil respiration using these tracers hinges on a better understanding of how soil micro-organisms modify the atmospheric concentrations of CO18O and COS at large scales. In particular, understanding better the role and activity of the enzyme Carbonic Anhydrase (CA) in soil micro-organisms is a critical factor underpinning the successful partitioning of gross fluxes at the global scale. Within this presentation I will review our understanding of the function of CA in soil micro-organisms and how its activity is likely to be influenced by environmental drivers that give rise to variations in soil CA activity observed in the field.
