| dc.description.abstract | En 1961, l’île Wallis obtint un statut de territoire d’outre-mer accordant une juridiction de droit particulier aux insulaires regroupés sous l’autorité d’une « chefferie ». Le contact avec les Occidentaux et la conversion au catholicisme entraînèrent, entre autres, l’arrêt des conflits armés, le nivellement des ordres sociaux, l’adoption du modèle chrétien de communauté et de groupe familial. « Ce qui est de valeur supérieure » (‘aliki), dont le chef suprême (le « roi ») était jusque-là la référence ultime, trouve désormais son origine en Dieu et perd une partie de sa pertinence. Ces mutations n’altèrent cependant pas l’idée que les Wallisiens se font de leur identité qui a pour référence le « pays » (fenua) dont le « roi » est le garant. | |
| dc.description.abstractEn | In 1961, Wallis Island obtained the French legal and administrative status of Territoire d’outre-mer (Oversea territory). This granted a special customary jurisdiction (“juridiction de droit particulier”) to the population under the authority of a “chieftaincy”. Contact with the West and conversion to Catholicism led, among other things, to the end of armed conflicts, the levelling of social orders, the adoption of the Christian model of community and family group. Since then, « what is of higher value » (‘aliki), of which the paramount chief (the “king”) was the ultimate reference, finds its origin in God and losses a part of its relevance. These changes, however, do not alter the idea of Wallisian people about their identity which has as its reference the “country” (fenua) of which the “king” is the guarantor. | |
