Avec la perspective d’élimination de la transmission du VIH/sida de la mère à l’enfant, le sida devient-il un “véritable problème de santé publique” ?

Abstract

Does the issue of the elimination of mother to child transmission make AIDS a “real public health problem”? The elimination of mother to child transmission is on the worldwide agenda. Test and treatment are now more and more available in developing countries, optimal strategies for implementation are defined, and the challenge of elimination is medically feasible at the large scale. However, reaching this goal is linked to the routine implementation of PMTCT device in peripheral level’s facilities. Observations in Burkina Faso suggest that this implementation is confronted to well known issues at the peripheral level of reporting, health personnel training, task shifting, drug shortage, mothers’ information. Like for any other disease, in developing countries, the challenge is the health offer improvement in all its scope. In other words, we could say the eMCT is not anymore a technical (medical) problem but a “real public health problem”.
