The ESA astrometric space mission GAIA, to be launched by 2011, will survey all stars and QSOs down to an apparent magnitude of 20. It is estimated that 500 000 such QSOs should be detected, with position accuracies ranging from 40 muas at magnitude 15-18 to 100-200 muas at magnitude 20. Of these, a "clean sample" comprising 10,000 QSOs of the highest astrometric quality is envisioned for defining the GAIA frame. For reasons of continuity, it will be important that the future GAIA frame be linked to the present ICRF with the highest accuracy. However, it is found that only a limited portion of the current ICRF sources is likely to be seen by GAIA. In order to improve the link, we have searched dense radio catalogs to identify additional candidate sources and discuss the possibility of observing such sources with the present VLBI networks as part of the preparatory work for GAIA.
