The paper analyses the thirteenth-century painted representations of the death of St. Francis. It underlines how they do not follow the different legendae, very probably in order to avoid their polemical charge, and how they depict instead a very general funeral scene, absent from the legendae. This choice can be seen as a way to evidence the friars’ role in funeral rites, claimed by the time by the Franciscan Order against the attacks of secular clergy.Read less <
