Read less <

By referring to the traditional definition of the musical chord, we will first highlight the structuring role of this concept within the tonal system as a whole, and then its scope within the framework of the general aesthetics developed between Romanticism and the end of the 19th century – where, as the source of a syntagmatic, it becomes the model of an arts grammar. On this basis, we will show how this “aesthetic of the chord” has been overturned in so-called “contemporary” art by the introduction of new organizational principles – ranging from dissonance to stridence – against the ideals of “consonance” and “harmony”. In this context, the chord as a formal principle of the artistic work gives way, on other levels of relevance, to the chord as an aesthetic and interactional phenomenon. By introducing alternative forms of semiosis, contemporary art questions the very definition of art and aesthetics.Read less <
