The paper argues the case for considering urban density as a social fact from social representations. The study of metropolitan inner suburbs seems to show that social representations contribute significantly to its latest attractiveness. The diversity of inner suburbs urban atmosphere appears to offer possibilities to make dense housing, to apply principles of sustainable planning, and to shape a new urban and residential compromise for people. Social representation of urban density, in its values and ambiances, seems to lead both urban project and its acceptability, which would allow a new understanding of urban mutations.Read less <
