This chapter brings out an analysis of the French philologue Emile Egger’s book Apollonius Dyscole. Essai sur l’histoire des théories grammaticales dans l’Antiquité (1854). In addition to a very comprehensive documentation for the time about Apollonius and the ancient grammarians, the book relies on a steady knowledge of the available manuscripts of Apollonius. According to Egger, the grammarian’s treatises deserves to get out of oblivion. After giving an account of this oblivion, he highlights how rich and subtle Apollonius’grammatical theories are, calling him both a philosopher and a grammarian. He also shows how he is part of a long tradition where he is a prominent figure. Eventually, he demonstrates how innovative were Apollonius’ treatises and how following the paths he sometimes only initiated could be of great profit for linguists of his own time – and maybe of ours.Read less <
