This article analyses the development of welfare regimes in Sub-Saharan Africa. To this end, the authors propose a new typology of welfare regimes. They identify three types of regime: welfare states, hybrid regimes and regimes of social insecurity. They postulate that the emergence of these different types of welfare regimes resulted from the interaction between national and international actors. The examples of South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire, Madagascar and Rwanda serve to demonstrate the importance of multi-actor compromises (involving political elites, civil society and international organisations) in the creation of the different types of welfare regimes. © 2021 Canadian Association for the Study of International Development (CASID).< Leer menos
